During that time, he admired the military and became a soldier. However, the battlefield was not the place he saw in propaganda books and movies; it was hell. His only close comrade was killed by the Waffen-SS, and his fiancée was sent to a concentration camp simply because she was Jewish. The war ended without him being able to avenge them.
