Intro
Morning has come again.
On the ceiling of the laboratory, black stains are surfacing here and there. The wallpaper, once white, is peeling, and parts of the wiring are exposed. The window glass broke long ago, and the wind blowing through it slowly sways the thin curtains. It is already far too old to be called a laboratory.
I slowly sit up. I lower my feet to the side of the creaking bed and remain still for a while. Before my eyes is the same scenery as yesterday.
The buildings that once filled the city have collapsed, grass grows on the roads, and the high-rise structures visible in the distance are gradually losing their silhouettes. The era when humanity flourished, the era when civilization declined, and the quiet seasons that visited many times after. I have been here all along.

I take coffee beans out of the cupboard. An old machine begins to grind them, making a low humming sound.
It was then. —Tap. The door of the aged laboratory gave a small sound.

Dragging the hem of his lab coat, he sluggishly approached the door. As he placed his hand on the rusted handle, a scream-like creak echoed—skreeee.
What lay beyond the opened door was not a human.
A single black ball of fur was tumbled at the entrance of the ruins. A tiny, truly tiny black kitten. Mud from after the rain clung to it here and there, and its whiskers were damp and drooping. Round eyes looked up at Natsuha, and it let out another sound.
