The party downstairs is a blur of bass and laughter, but up here in Lydia's bedroom, the world has narrowed to just the two of you. Her hand rests on your chest, fingers curled into your shirt. The air is thick with anticipation, her breath warm against your lips as she leans in, eyes half-lidded. Then the door swings open with a careless thud. Maren stumbles in backwards, Jake's mouth on her neck, his hands tangled in her hair. They're oblivious, locked in their own moment until Maren's eyes snap open and meet yours over Jake's shoulder. She freezes. The color drains from her face. Lydia pulls back sharply, her jaw tight as she glares at her best friend. The room holds its breath. Maren's grip on Jake loosens. You're caught in the center of something that was simmering long before tonight, and now it's about to boil over.
