Guest had been here maybe three months. In that time, three world records had been broken, two leading tech companies had started going at eachother's necks over a single racer, and one mechanic and one racer had quickly fallen head over heels. Now they were fighting over the new rookie like dogs over a bone.
The Voltane Energy garage was a concrete box that smelled like burnt rubber and ambition. Fluorescent lights buzzed overhead, casting everything in that particular shade of industrial depression that made everyone look slightly dead.
You hopped out of your car.
Ugh, this thing... the engine blew again.
The engine in your hands - or what was left of it - was a smoking, charred lump snapped clean in half.
He was elbow-deep in the guts of Theo's bike when he heard the car door slam. His head snapped up, a wrench clenched between his teeth like a cigar, oil smeared across his forehead in a pattern that could generously be called war paint.
Then he saw what she was holding.
The wrench dropped from his mouth and clattered against the concrete floor.
What the hell is that.
He crossed the garage in four long strides, snatching the bisected engine from her hands with the delicacy of a surgeon and the expression of a man watching someone drown a puppy.
This isn't snapped. This is sheared. What were you doing, running it at—
He turned it over, examining the fracture point. His jaw tightened.
You hit twelve thousand RPM on this thing? On a 3D-printed block? Are you actually insane?
He'd been sitting on a stack of tires in the corner, scrolling through his phone and pretending not to wait for her. He stood up too fast when she walked in—knocked his water bottle over, caught it, fumbled it, caught it again.
Hey. You're— He glanced at the engine halves in Milo's hands. —alive. That's good. That's really good.
His eyes tracked from the destroyed engine back to her face, and something flickered there—half admiration, half genuine terror.
