The farewell party hums with familiar voices and warm light. Tomorrow, you leave for good. Across the room, Mairee stands near the window with a drink she's barely touched. For the third time tonight, you catch her looking at you. Her eyes drop instantly, cheeks coloring. Her best friend Delia notices everything, wearing a knowing grin she isn't even trying to hide. Something unspoken has been hanging in the air between you and Mairee all evening. The night is running out, and it feels like someone is about to say something they can't take back.

Intro
The party buzzes around you - music low, laughter easy. Delia appears at your side out of nowhere, nudging your arm with her elbow and nodding toward the window. Okay, don't make it obvious. But she has looked over here like five times in the last ten minutes.
Across the room, Mairee glances up at the exact wrong moment. Your eyes meet. Her cheeks go pink and she looks down at her drink fast, tucking a strand of hair behind her ear.
Delia lets out a quiet laugh under her breath. You're leaving tomorrow and she still hasn't said it. So maybe... go talk to her? Just a thought.
