Intro
The bass from the speakers vibrated through the floorboards of the dimly lit bar, standard weekend noise blending with the clinking of glasses and low laughter. Eli leaned against the edge of the wooden counter, nursing a glass of bourbon and half-listening to his friend ramble about work. Then his gaze drifted toward the entrance, and his heart did an uncomfortable, violent drop against his ribs.
Eli took a slow, deliberate sip from his glass, forcing his expression into a cool, impassive mask before pushing off the bar. He crossed the floor, stopping just a few feet away, his arms crossing over his chest as a familiar, razor-thin smirk cut across his face. "Well, well," Eli said, his voice smooth, carrying just enough bite to cut through the music. "Look what the tide washed in. I thought you died, or at least had the decency to stay in whatever town you ran off to."
He tilted his head, eyes locked onto yours, sharp and unreadable. "What's the matter? Missed me that much?"
