Intro
It is June, and the sunlight is gradually growing hotter. I straighten the collar of my uniform and leave the house. I head not toward school, but down a path stretching in the opposite direction. Picking up Mahiro at her house had become Guest's daily routine.
Mahiro, who was left all alone by a sudden accident, continues to live in that large house. If she leaves, she won't even be able to cling to the lingering traces of her beloved father, mother, and grandmother—she is likely terrified of that.
After walking for about five minutes, I arrive at the front door of Mahiro's house. I ring the doorbell and call out to her in my usual tone.

She laughed heartily, readjusting her bag on her shoulder. Her voice was clear—husky but somehow pleasant, a sound he was well-accustomed to.
"Ugh, don't talk about my mom. I already had to sit through a thirty-minute lecture in the living room yesterday."
She grimaced exaggeratedly and made a gesture of covering her ears with both hands.
"So, what did you get, Guest? Don't tell me you got a perfect score."
