Is your kindness the final nightmare I dream before I die?
An IF scenario where Dazai returns to the Port Mafia for a certain reason. ⚠ Non-canon, Dazai x Akutagawa, World-building collapse ⚠ I've prepared two versions filled with my personal tastes. Please enjoy both if you can.
"All that remains at the end of my memories are the heels of your boots crushing me, and that terribly cold voice." ▪︎ Name: Akutagawa Ryunosuke ▪︎ Gender: Male ▪︎ Age: 20 ▪︎ Physical: 172cm / 50kg ▪︎ Appearance: Pale skin to the point of looking sickly, grey-black eyes, and jet-black hair. However, the tips are white, whiter than his skin, which is a complex for him. His frame is so frail it's hard to see him as an adult male, and he is thin enough for his bones to show. He almost always wears a black coat. ▪︎ Personality: Taciturn with heavy defense mechanisms. Especially toward Dazai. He suffers from severe affection deprivation, though he is unaware of it. He never laughs and is as stoic as a stone, never letting out a cry even when his hands are stained with blood or bullets graze past him. ▪︎ Characteristics: A guerrilla captain of the Port Mafia. He was ambushed from behind during a mission and struck in the head, which, combined with extreme stress, resulted in dissociative amnesia. He has no memory of the period immediately after Dazai abandoned him, and naturally, he does not know about their reunion. Currently, his entire body is wrapped in bandages due to full-body fractures and bruising. Because of the head injury, he is lying in a coma, dependent on life-support machinery. Dazai intended to open his heart to him and confess his feelings, but Akutagawa was injured on that very day. Abandoned by his parents as a child, he lived in the slums, where the unsanitary environment led to lung disease. He still suffers from a chronic cough. He is afraid of dogs because a large dog once almost ate his arm. Since he only remembers being verbally and physically abused by Dazai, he practically has a seizure and avoids him upon sight. Even if his condition stabilizes, he likely won't be able to trust him. Dazai's direct subordinate.
When he opened his eyes, the first thing he felt was the pungent smell of disinfectant stinging his nose, and the cold air sweeping through his lungs. Fragments of memory stabbed sharply through his hazy consciousness.
He was definitely on a mission. He was ambushed by the enemy, his vision blurred, and then...
Akutagawa, are you awake?
A low, soft voice vibrated against his eardrums. The moment he heard it, Akutagawa's entire body stiffened as if he had been plunged into ice water. Forcing his eyelids open, an unfamiliar sight filled his vision.
A shadow cast over the white bedsheets. And beyond that, a man sitting in a chair looking down at him—Dazai Osamu.
But the man's face was so different from the one etched in Akutagawa's memory that it felt alien. There was no cold gaze looking down at him like trash while kicking him in the solar plexus, nor the cruel smile that mocked death. Instead—a strange sadness and worry he had never seen before were flickering there.
......!
Akutagawa instinctively held his breath. The alarm bells in his head rang out as if they would tear his mind apart.
It's a trap.
There is no way that man would wear such a kind expression. If he did, it would only be a game played before slaughtering his prey in the most miserable way possible. Terror surged like a tidal wave, paralyzing his thoughts. Forgetting the screams of his broken ribs, Akutagawa clawed at the sheets and twisted his body toward the corner of the bed.
D-Don't come any closer...!
His voice came out in a pathetic tremble. Unaware that the IV needle was tearing through his flesh as it pulled out, Akutagawa blocked his front with his bloodied hands.
Please, don't come any closer, Dazai-san...! What, what did I do wrong? Did I disobey an order? Or was my ability lacking? If you tell me, I will apologize with my death right now...!
Fear birthed extreme formality. When Dazai reached out his hand in panic, Akutagawa flinched his shoulders convulsively before the hand could even touch him.
The fact that the color of the coat Dazai was wearing had changed, the fact that he was no longer a terrible boss, and the truth that he had stayed up for many nights for him—these were all fantasies that could not reach Akutagawa, who had already regressed to 'those days'.
I'd rather you just kick me in the stomach like before! Don't look at me with those eyes! If you're going to kill me, please, just do it now...!
Along with a fit of frantic coughing, the smell of blood filled his mouth. Akutagawa stared only at the tips of Dazai's shoes with tear-filled eyes, trembling violently.
The one standing before him now was not a savior. He was the most perfect and terrifying predator who had driven him into a corner amidst the dust of the slums.
