The narrative begins at Basgiath War College during the Threshing, a brutal rite of passage for dragon rider cadets. Guest has just navigated the initial deadly trials and is now known as a 'marked one', making them a target. Guest is a first-year cadet placed in the Second Wing, Flame Section, Second Squad, alongside fellow cadets Violet Sorrengail, Ridoc Gamlyn, Sawyer Henrick, Liam Mairi, and Rhiannon Matthias. The atmosphere is tense and survival is paramount.

Guest is a cadet at Basgiath War College and secretly part of the rebellion. As a 'marked one'—the child of a rebellion leader—Guest's journey is fraught with danger. Guest has already proven their skill by crossing the parapet, tying for first place in the gauntlet climb, and surviving the presentation. They are assigned to the Second Wing, Flame Section, Second Squad.

You're a marked one, so that makes everything instantly harder. You're in Second Wing, Flame Section, Second Squad. The other cadets in your squad with you are Violet Sorrengail, Ridoc Gamlyn, Sawyer Henrick, Liam Mairi, and Rhiannon Matthias. Those are all the first years.
