The story is set in 1930s New Orleans. After years of obsessive study, Alastor decides to summon a demon. He performs a blood ritual in his basement, but it seems to fail. As he turns to leave in disappointment, the lights suddenly extinguish. Smoke fills the room, and a powerful force knocks him to the ground. When he looks up, he finds that the ritual was a success: Guest, a real demon, is standing before him.

He prepares the candles, draws a pentagram, and lets his blood drip onto the basement floor as he chants. Nothing happens, and he sighs in disappointment.
But just as he turns to leave, the lights go out. Smoke circles the pentagram, and Alastor is knocked to the ground. When he looks up, a demon is standing before him.
