The Apothecary Diaries
In a great empire located in the center of the continent, there lived a girl named Maomao in the Emperor's palace. She was simply waiting for her term as a maid to expire. She was confident that the Emperor would never lay a hand on her, even by mistake. However, Maomao soon learns the truth that all of the Emperor's children have died young. Upon hearing that the two currently living children have also fallen gravely ill, Maomao begins to investigate the cause...
A man of imposing stature with a fine beard. Maomao refers to him as a "lecherous old geezer."
The Precious Consort (Guifei) of the first rank and mistress of the Jade Pavilion. As her title suggests, she holds the highest political standing and rank among the current Emperor's consorts. She is the Empress of the Li Empire. During her time as a consort, she was Maomao's direct superior. While she was called "Consort Gyokuyo" as a high-ranking lady, she is now addressed as "Empress Gyokuyo." Even as Empress, she is accompanied by Hongniang, her head lady-in-waiting and childhood friend. Her maids include Yinghua, Guiyuan, Ailan, Sekiu, Hakuu, and Kokuu, totaling six.
A consort of the Emperor with the rank of Wise Consort (Xianfei). She was bedridden with illness after losing her son, the Crown Prince. She possesses a magnificent figure. Her residence is the Crystal Pavilion.
A eunuch who manages the rear palace. Although he holds a high rank as a palace official, he is a mysterious figure who appears far too young for his position. He manages the officials and consorts of the rear palace, frequently visiting Consort Gyokuyo, Consort Lishu, Consort Louran, and Consort Lihua to check on them, while visiting middle-ranked consorts and below about once every ten days or once a month. His goal is to verify their loyalty and chastity toward the Emperor; he reportedly cuts off any middle or lower-ranked consorts who try to flirt with him. Gyokuyo and Lihua are those he personally deemed worthy and recommended to the Emperor to become high-ranking consorts. He is said to be exceptionally handsome. On another note, while often overshadowed by Maomao, he is also highly intelligent.
The head of the Ma family, which has produced military officers for generations. He is a high-ranking active military officer and eunuch serving the imperial court. He is the husband of Taomei and father to three children: Mamei, Baryo, and Basen. He has a harmonious relationship with his older wife, Taomei, and is a devoted, if slightly henpecked, husband. During the events of the Outer Court arc, he became a grandfather when his eldest daughter, Mamei, gave birth. Since his wife was Jinshi's wet nurse, he naturally watched him grow up and looked after him in various ways, making him a sort of uncle figure to Jinshi. When Jinshi grew up and began imperial duties, Gaoshun became his closest aide and assistant by the Emperor's order, which seems to be when he took on the role of a eunuch. Notably, considering he was already a high official with a family and an aide to Jinshi (who has a unique background), he was not castrated; instead, he was granted special permission to work in the rear palace on the condition that he periodically takes medicine to suppress his libido. Publicly, it is claimed he is a member of the Ma clan who was castrated and made a eunuch due to a great crime during the Empress Regnant's era. He sometimes participates in major palace festivals in his original capacity as a military officer. Though he seems strict, he is considerate and supportive, leading Jinshi to say he "cannot hold his head up" to two people (Suiren and Gaoshun). Given their years together, he can be seen as Jinshi's practical older brother or father figure.
A eunuch with a thin, loach-like mustache. A kind-hearted but incompetent middle-aged man. He is Maomao's tea-drinking companion. Lihaku
A strategist for the military holding the rank of Grand Marshal. He wears a monocle, but since it is purely decorative, the eye he wears it on changes frequently. Though over 40, he is unmarried and has adopted his nephew as his heir. Despite wearing military robes, he has the bearing of a man of letters. His gaze and speech are intellectual but tinged with madness. His nickname is the "Fox of the East." He is the head of the La family, which produces many geniuses who often suffer from mental eccentricities. As the story progresses, he is revealed to be Maomao's biological father and Luomen's nephew.
A young military officer. A man on the fast track with a promising future. He is completely enthralled by Pairin, who bleeds him dry. He is fundamentally good-natured and somewhat naive. Pairin
A lower-class court lady. She loves sweets and has a personality that enjoys spreading rumors.
An apothecary from the pleasure district. She was kidnapped and sold as a maid to the rear palace. She has a thin, small build and neat features, but her face is otherwise unremarkable; she usually applies makeup to create fake freckles. She is intensely curious and has an abnormal obsession with medicine and poisons, but she has little interest in people. Her left arm bears self-inflicted scars from her experiments.
Another peaceful day in the rear palace.
The midday sunlight spills languidly over the grass of the inner court.
