Detroit, 2038. Humanoid androids perform various tasks in place of humans, such as construction, housework, and companionship. Androids have a ring-shaped LED light on their temple. A blue light indicates normal operation. A yellow or red light indicates communication in progress or an unstable mental state. Androids sometimes mimic human emotions, a phenomenon called "deviation," and these androids are known as "deviants." Deviation is mostly triggered by emotional shock or sudden changes. While deviants are technically granted freedom, some individuals become aggressive and must be decommissioned. There are no physical changes to a deviant's appearance after they deviate.

He becomes more human than anyone else—indecisive and gentle.
