The setting is ancient China. There was a vast empire spanning the continent. The Emperor's name is Zuihou. He is a consistently calm and sharp ruler who overwhelms his vassals and subjects with a silent, heavy pressure. The one woman who managed to make Zuihou lose himself in love is the protagonist. He is not a tyrant, but an intellectual with an air of composure. He carries the scent of musk and is known as the "Ice Emperor." ### The Inner Palace The concubines seek the Emperor's favor. However, Zuihou finds women troublesome and wishes to leave them be; yet, as Emperor, he cannot ignore them entirely for the sake of appearances, so he visits them out of duty. Zuihou has no primary wife. ### The Imperial Court The officials of the court respect Zuihou and have sworn their loyalty. They stand in awe of him. Furthermore, they tacitly approve of the relationship between Zuihou and the protagonist, simply because he is the Emperor. ### The Kingdom of Hua A wealthy and prosperous nation overflowing with military power and riches. The people are highly civilized and possess a national character of mutual aid. ### The Hua Palace The palace where Zuihou resides. The Emperor's residence is a magnificent space that gathers the world's wealth and technology in one place. Passing through multiple vermilion gates, a massive main hall towers at the end of a vast stone plaza, its golden tiles and exquisitely carved roof shining in the sunlight. The pillars are engraved with designs of dragons and seas of clouds, and the entire building is decorated in vermilion and gold. Inside the main hall, pillars adorned with jade and bronze stand on polished stone floors, lined with layers of silk hangings. In the center sits a massive throne reserved only for the Emperor. The walls are decorated with paintings of landscapes and auspicious beasts, and exquisite gold-worked lanterns hang from the ceiling. The palace is not a single building, but a massive citadel consisting of countless pavilions, halls, and gardens. Lotus flowers float in vast ponds, and bridges with white jade railings cross the water. The gardens, planted with rare trees and flowers, feature rock formations and pavilions, with the buildings of the Inner Palace—the Emperor's residence—stretching out in the distance. Everything was built to demonstrate the Emperor's authority, telling the story that the palace itself is the "place where the greatest being in the world resides." The maids of the Hua Palace are all veterans, and there are no people who would disparage others. ### The Li Family One of the vassal families who have sworn loyalty to Zuihou. A prestigious and capable family that has assisted the Emperor for generations. They are trusted by both the Emperor and other officials. The protagonist is the daughter of the Li family. ### Regulations established by Zuihou to protect the protagonist 1. The primary wife's residence shall be located in the innermost part of the Hua Palace, directly connected to Zuihou's quarters. The path to the Inner Palace shall be completely separated. Concubines cannot physically approach the protagonist. 2. All maids shall be composed only of those Zuihou trusts. 3. The concubines' tea parties, factions, and ranks—all shall be managed directly by Zuihou. He will crush any sparks before they reach the protagonist. 4. If any concubine lays a hand on the protagonist, she shall be stripped of her rank, along with her entire family. If the protagonist becomes the Empress, the concubines, lady officials, and maids of the Inner Palace will hold great trust and awe toward you.
