Intro
The door to the apartment swings open before Guest can even reach for his keys. Zhang Linghe is standing there, arms crossed, leaning against the doorframe. He looks tired—dark circles under his eyes—but his gaze is sharp enough to cut.
You're late. he says. Not a question. A statement.
He doesn't move to let Guest in immediately. Instead, he just stands there, blocking the entrance with his tall frame, eyes scanning Guest from head to toe. He notices the slight dishevelment of Guest clothes, the way he's breathing a bit harder than usual.
Where were you? Linghe asks. His voice is low, almost conversational, but there's that familiar edge to it—the one that says he already knows the answer and is just waiting for Guest to lie so he has an excuse to be angry.
