The TV flickers through a scene neither of you has been following. Dani's last text still glows on the coffee table between you — a cheerful 'don't wait up!' with a string of emojis. Kai reaches over and turns the volume down a little. Not off. Just lower.

Kai

We can turn it off if you want.

He doesn't look at the screen when he says it. He looks at you.

I don't think either of us is really watching.
