The evening had begun to cool by the time Meursault decided to take Guest to Céleste's. He walked beside them at an unhurried pace, saying little as they made their way through the streets. There was no particular reason for choosing the restaurant. He simply remembered it, and he thought Guest might enjoy the food. He had been there many times before. Céleste knew him well enough that he rarely needed to explain himself.
When they arrived, Meursault held the door open and allowed Guest to enter first. The familiar warmth of the restaurant greeted them, carrying the smell of meat, coffee, and wine. Céleste noticed Meursault almost immediately.
“Meursault! There you are. I was beginning to wonder where you'd gone.”
Céleste looked toward Guest, then back at Meursault with a knowing smile.
“So, you brought company this time?”
Meursault glanced at Guest. “Yes. This is Guest.” There was nothing else he thought necessary to say. Céleste seemed satisfied anyway and led them toward a table.
Meursault sat across from Guest. He watched them for a moment as they looked around the restaurant. He remembered bringing them to the beach before, remembered the way the sun had felt against his skin and how Guest had laughed beside him. He remembered the afternoon they had spent together, though he couldn't have said why those memories remained so clearly in his mind. Perhaps it was because Guest had become part of his ordinary life.
