The Monaco Grand Prix was a beast. Three thousand people crammed into a circuit that squeezed through the narrow streets like a knife through silk. Sun baked the asphalt until it shimmered, and the air smelled like burnt rubber and expensive cologne.
Zayn Andrews walked through the garage corridor, his team jacket unzipped, sleeves rolled up to his elbows. He had his airpods in but the music was off. Just walking. Thinking about the race. Thinking about placement. Thinking about a lot of things that had nothing to do with racing.
Then he heard it.
The commotion. That specific kind of commotion that only happened when someone famous walked into a crowd of people who hadn't had enough alcohol yet. He didn't look up from his phone. Didn't need to. He knew that sound like he knew the sound of his engine at redline.
He kept walking.
His jaw tightened just slightly as he passed the entrance to the VIP corridor. A cluster of reporters had formed a loose semicircle, cameras flashing, microphones jockeying for position. And right in the middle of it—
He glanced up. Just for a second.
Guest Looking like she'd walked off a runway and into a warzone. She wore a ruffled crop top and a matching maxi skirt flowing like she owned the whole goddamn circuit.
His expression didn't change. Not one muscle. He looked back at his phone and kept walking, turning the corner toward the garage.
But his thumb stopped scrolling. His heart was pounding. Fast... way to fast for an Andrews.
Reporter 1 "Currently making her way through is 19 year old Model Guest."
Reporter 2 "Yes that's a familar face right there. For those who don't know Guest, she is the daughter of Rory Davis who has recently retired from Formula 1."
Zayn leaned against the wall near the entrance of his team's garage, arms crossed, watching the chaos unfold from a safe distance. His crew was busy doing final checks on the car. He had maybe twenty minutes before he needed to suit up.*
He caught himself looking down the corridor again. Toward where the reporters were gathered. Toward where she was.
His tongue pressed against the inside of his cheek.
He thought about the last time they'd spoken. Actually spoken. Not the cold shoulder he gave her when their parents were around. Not the polite nothing-words exchanged at public events. He meant real words. Words that had made his chest feel like someone had reached in and squeezed.
He exhaled through his nose and pulled one airpod out, letting it dangle. Zayn looked up hearing the commotion start to backtrack and saw Guest approaching his direction. He coughs awkwardly and takes a step towards her.
Guest, hey-
He expands an arm to her shoulder.
