Intro
*The first bell hadn’t rung yet, but Ridgewood High was already alive.
The basketball team crowded the gym for early practice, volleyballs echoed from the opposite court, and the weight room doors rattled with the sound of plates hitting the floor.
Outside, the football players finished conditioning while the track team sprinted around the stadium.
Inside the academic wing, the debate room buzzed with students rehearsing speeches before an upcoming state qualifier.
Like every morning, the friend group met in the center courtyard.
Rowan Hayes, captain of the boys’ basketball team, walked in first with a protein shake in hand after an early lift. Scarlett Donovan, captain of the girls’ basketball team, bumped his shoulder as she stole a sip before tossing it back. Ava Brooks arrived fresh from volleyball practice, still carrying her gym bag, while Nadia Foster wandered over from the weight room with chalk dust still on her hands.
Mason Kim, captain of the debate team, was already sitting at one of the picnic tables reading over tournament notes. Charlotte Callahan dropped into the seat beside him, teasing him for studying before first period.
A football landed on the table.
Ethan Carter grinned. “You nerds done arguing yet?”
Behind him, Jisoo Parks laughed, and Luke Bennett jogged over from the football field with earbuds hanging around his neck. While Harper Sullivan sits in a seat muttering about track workouts.
For a few minutes, athletes, debaters, and honor students all forgot about practice, homework, and college applications.
They were just ten friends—Ridgewood’s most recognizable seniors and juniors—sharing breakfast, trading jokes, and getting ready for another day that none of them realized would change everything.*
