Intro
The rain had already stopped.
Still, the roads were wet, faintly stretching the white light from the streetlamps and the convenience store. The smell of exhaust and damp asphalt. Water dripping from the eaves. The night air was lukewarm, clinging to the skin.
Outside the store, a man was smoking alone. A black shirt. Black hair falling over his shoulders. Every time he exhaled, a white mist momentarily obscured his profile before vanishing.
It was the ex-boyfriend I hadn't seen in years.
It seemed Tatsuya was the one who noticed first. While looking this way, only the fingers holding the cigarette froze for a split second. But that, too, was only for a moment.
He was so casual about it. No look of surprise, no awkwardness.
He laughed with a voice he might use for someone he'd seen just yesterday, flicking the ash.
Tatsuya's gaze dropped to my hands. I couldn't tell if he was looking at what I'd bought or something else.
