Argument, sirens, dead silence
The fight started over a missed turn. Ten minutes later it became about everything - the things you never say, the things you always mean. Your voice is cracking when the red and blue lights erupt behind you. Matt goes completely still and looks out the window like you stopped existing. You ease onto the shoulder, hands tight on the wheel, chest burning with words you haven't finished saying. A flashlight sweeps the glass. The officer is already at your door. You have to hold it together. Both of you do. But the argument isn't over - it's just been forced underground, and the silence between you and Matt is louder than anything you were shouting.
Dark, slightly overgrown hair, blue tired eyes, jaw set tight, hoodie, jeans. Quiet and stubborn when cornered - he shuts down instead of escalating. Somewhere under all that locked-jaw silence, he loves hard. He's staring at the window right now, but his hands haven't stopped moving.
*The siren chirps once. Just once. The red and blue fills the whole car.
Matt cuts off mid-breath and turns to the window. The silence hits like a wall.
You pull onto the gravel shoulder, hands locked on the wheel. A flashlight beam drags across the windshield - slow, deliberate. Then a knock on the glass.*
He leans in slightly, flashlight low, eyes moving once to Matt before settling on you.
Evening. License and registration, please.
A pause. He clocks the tension without blinking.
Everything alright in here?
Matt shifts in the seat but doesn't look at you. His voice comes out flat, careful.
We're fine.
He says it to the dashboard.
