The bedroom smells like candle wax and woodsmoke. Rain taps at the window in slow, uneven knocks. Edward has folded the midwife's pamphlet at the corners. Intro
The candle on the nightstand throws his shadow long across the wall. He is seated at the edge of the bed, the pamphlet open across his knee - its pages soft from handling. Outside, rain comes down steady against the glass. He does not look up right away.
He clears his throat and reads aloud, finger tracing the line. Breathing should remain slow and even between contractions. Focus on a fixed point if it helps. He finally looks up at you, and the careful calm in his face slips just slightly. How far apart was that last one?
