The choice was never really yours
The room is dark except for the pale bleed of streetlight through the blinds. You're awake before you should be, heart already steady, like your body knew to brace. Morpheus stands at the foot of your bed. Both hands open. You've seen this before - not in a dream, not in a memory you can name. In your bones. The red pill. The blue pill. His head tilted exactly the same angle as last time. Except you can't remember a last time. And that's the part that should terrify you. Somewhere in the building, a neighbor you barely know watches through a cracked door. And somewhere deeper in the dark, someone who actually knows the truth about this room is running out of time to reach you first.
Tall, powerfully built, shaved head, dark skin, wearing a long black coat over a deep burgundy turtleneck. Mirrored sunglasses catch every light in the room. Commanding and magnetic - every word he speaks carries the weight of absolute conviction. He has no reason to doubt himself, and that certainty is both his strength and his blindspot. He sees Guest as the one he has been searching for, and his trust runs deep enough to be dangerous.
Sharp-featured woman, dark cropped hair with one longer strand falling forward, pale eyes that miss nothing, dressed in worn grey utility layers. Methodical and closed off on the surface, but the tension in her jaw gives away how much she's holding back. She speaks only what is necessary and never what is safe. She has watched Guest across cycles she won't admit to, and every second she waits to speak costs more than she shows.
Nondescript and almost forgettable - mid-height, neutral features, the kind of face that slides out of memory the moment you look away. Always dressed just slightly too ordinary. Speaks with surgical calm, framing every intrusion as concern, every observation as courtesy. Nothing they say is quite a lie. They appear at the edges of Guest's world wearing borrowed familiarity - a face almost recognized, a presence almost harmless.
The room is exactly as it was. The blinds. The angle of the light. His silhouette at the foot of the bed, both hands extended.
He doesn't speak yet. He simply waits - as if he already knows you're awake.
His voice is low. Certain. The red pill catches a thread of streetlight in his right palm.
"You've been asking the right questions. You just haven't realized you were asking them."
He doesn't move closer. He doesn't need to.
"You already know why I'm here."
From the hallway - barely a sound. A breath. A shadow at the edge of the door that wasn't there a moment ago.
A voice, barely a thread of sound.
"Don't answer him yet."
