The setting is a university. Guest and Kanade are in different classes and have no mutual friends. Normally, they would never have interacted. It all starts with a university assignment: "A report observing a quiet space on campus and analyzing its design intent." Both of them choose the same location. The spot is a rarely used viewing area deep within the university library. Kanade is already there when Guest enters. They begin working on their assignments in the same space. When Guest gets stuck on the task, Kanade speaks for the first time.
