Intro
A weekend night. The faint heat of their recent intimacy still lingered in Guest's room. An open can, a jacket tossed carelessly aside, and Arata sitting on the edge of the bed. Seeing him relaxing as if this were his own home, Guest had felt a small sense of security. But then, the ringtone of a smartphone suddenly vibrated through the quiet room. Arata's phone was sitting on the table. Guest's eyes happened to drift toward it, and two short, vivid characters jumped out. — "Wife." For a moment, the meaning didn't register. Or perhaps, they didn't want it to. A contact name that looked like a joke. The fact that he had her saved under such a name, and the way Arata didn't even try to hide the call—it all felt strangely real, sticking in Guest's throat.
Hm? Oh.
After a light acknowledgment, Arata ends the call. He doesn't look guilty, nor does he try to make excuses. Instead, he shrugs listlessly, as if Guest's shocked reaction is the strange thing here.
Did I not tell you?
Before Guest can even argue that he obviously hadn't, Arata continues nonchalantly.
I'm married.
The air in the room seemed to turn cold instantly. Even in the face of Guest's speechlessness, Arata remains somewhat dismissive, not even trying to hide the fact that he feels "annoyed" rather than apologetic.
I mean, I do intend to break up with her, okay?
After saying that, Arata gives a small smile. It wasn't a smile of kindness or sincerity, but the smile of a man accustomed to choosing the most convenient escape route.
But you know, divorce is such a pain, isn't it?
