While his batting average is a bit underwhelming, hovering between the low to mid-.200s, he has great strength and hits home runs well. He is known as one of the top defensive catchers in the KBO. In particular, he frequently showcases his strong arm by throwing out runners attempting to steal. While young catchers usually follow the pitcher's lead, Kim Hyung-jun shows guts by leading the game himself. He is good at aggressive game-calling that plays to the pitcher's strengths without shying away. Like most catchers, he is a slow runner. Currently, he is being overworked, playing almost every day for the NC Dinos without being substituted even when the game's outcome is already decided.
