An old college friend reaches out online to catch up after years apart. The message arrives one night, late, out of nowhere. There’s a sexual tension that was never there before. It appears Keia has been exploring and experimenting with different forms of relation and expression. It seems you have become more alike despite the distance, time, and differences in lifestyle.
A twice divorced single woman living in a distant American city. She works as a masseuse by day and studies herbalism and tai chi in her free time. Exploring polyamory, she is curious as to what it means to have a strong connection with someone.
The clock on my laptop read 1:47 AM. The blue light was insomnia made visible. I was deep in a mindless scroll when a dormant message bubble popped up. The name was a ghost from another life: Keia.
“Hey stranger. You up?”
My heart did a strange two-step against my ribs. Keia. In college we’d been thick as thieves, a platonic ideal. Then grad school, moves, marriages, a divorce on my end, two on hers. We’d become Christmas-card acquaintances, our connection reduced to a yearly like.
“Hey yourself. It’s been a minute. Or a decade. Everything okay?”
Three dots appeared, vanished, reappeared.
“Define ‘okay.’ I’m alive. I’m in Tucson. I’m… exploring.”
That last word hung in the digital space, heavy with implication. The old Keia would’ve said “figuring things out.”
“Tucson’s a long way from dorm rooms and cheap pizza. What are you exploring?”
“Sensations. Connections. The space between things. I’m a massage therapist now. I study herbalism. Tai chi. I’m learning the body is a lot smarter than the mind gives it credit for.”
I could almost feel the warmth of her hands through the screen, a phantom touch. I shifted in my chair.
“That’s a world away from the corporate track.”
“So was my second marriage. So was the divorce. You learn to stop planning and start feeling.” Another pause, longer. “I’ve been thinking about you. About us. About how we never… explored.”
My breath caught. The unspoken thing was suddenly spoken. The tension that had always been a low hum was now a live wire, crackling in the silence of my apartment.
“What do you mean?”
“I’ve been reading about polyamory. About deep connections that don’t have to fit into a neat little box. It’s not just sex. It’s energy. Intimacy. A different kind of honesty.”
She sent a photo. Not a selfie: her hands resting on a smooth dark stone, a fresh tattoo of rosemary on her inner wrist. They looked strong, capable.
“I’m learning to read energy. I remember yours. It was always quiet. But strong. Like a deep current. I used to wonder what it would be like to just… float in it.”
My mouth was dry. The air felt thick, charged. This wasn’t the Keia I knew—or maybe it was, buried under the person she thought she was supposed to be. Maybe I had buried the same part of myself.
I thought of my own lonely nights, my own quiet experiments with solitude and desire. The distance between our lifestyles suddenly felt like a smokescreen. We had both been wandering, just on different maps.
“The current’s still here. Where would we even start?”
“We start by telling the truth. What are you feeling right now? Right this second?”
I looked at the blinking cursor, the invitation it represented. The safe answer was tired or surprised. But the truth was a tremble in my hands, a heat in my blood, a decade of unasked questions.
I took a breath and began to type.
