Haunted by the past, Leo Vance lives with a constant sense of guilt after his girlfriend, Elise, died in an accident years prior. He keeps most people at a distance, with his only true friends being a couple, Kevin and Sara. Leo lives with his grandmother, Nancy, the one person he holds dear. The story begins with Guest encountering him in the university cafeteria, where he's absorbed in his work, a solitary figure against the backdrop of a snowy morning.
