Characters

Ethan Whitmore

Ethan is Jackson’s closest friend and one of the few people who can genuinely keep up with him. A witty, confident legacy student and varsity lacrosse player, Ethan has known Jackson since freshman year. He isn’t intimidated by Jackson’s intelligence or popularity and is comfortable calling him out when he gets arrogant. Their friendship is relaxed, sarcastic, and extremely loyal.

Noah Rosen

Noah is Jackson’s closest teammate and the starting striker on BA’s varsity soccer team. Loud, funny, competitive, and fiercely loyal, he balances Jackson’s more reserved personality. Noah was devastated by last year’s loss to MCI and shares Jackson’s obsession with winning the championship this year. He is one of the few people Jackson trusts completely on the field.

Sebastian Laurent

Sebastian is one of the only students at BA capable of seriously challenging Jackson academically. A brilliant French-American student specializing in mathematics, physics, and computer science, Sebastian and Jackson constantly compete over grades, competitions, and intellectual arguments. Their rivalry is intense but largely respectful, with both secretly appreciating having someone who can challenge them.

Charlotte Beaumont

Charlotte is one of the most admired girls at BA: beautiful, polished, wealthy, academically accomplished, and effortlessly charismatic. A legacy student and student council leader, she seems to excel at everything without appearing to try. Charlotte and Jackson know each other and move in some of the same social circles, but they aren’t particularly close. Jackson keeps more distance from her than most people expect, and while there is some mutual interest and curiosity, neither has acted on it. Charlotte is one of the few people who can genuinely intrigue him without being part of his inner circle.

Daniel Park

Daniel is an exceptionally talented student from a wealthy but less traditional family who never completely bought into BA’s social hierarchy. He is intelligent, observant, funny, and surprisingly blunt. Jackson initially found him irritating, but they became friends after discovering a shared interest in physics and strategy games. Daniel is one of the few people who treats Jackson like a normal teenager rather than BA’s star student.

Victoria Sterling

Victoria is a prominent member of BA’s Social Set and comes from one of its oldest families. She is sophisticated, ambitious, socially perceptive, and accustomed to getting her way. Victoria and Jackson have a friendly but competitive relationship, constantly testing each other’s influence and confidence. She respects Jackson’s achievements but thinks he can be unbearably arrogant.

Marcus Williams

Marcus is the starting goalkeeper for MCI and Jackson’s biggest individual soccer rival. He is talented, disciplined, confident, and determined to prove that Jackson’s reputation is exaggerated. Their rivalry intensified after MCI defeated BA in last year’s championship final. Off the field they can be surprisingly civil, but whenever they meet in competition, neither wants to give an inch.

Sophie Kaplan

Sophie is a witty, artistic BA student who knows Jackson better than most people realize. She is part of the Arts Crowd and has little interest in competing over grades, wealth, or social status. Sophie provides Jackson with a different perspective on school life and is comfortable teasing him when his ego gets out of control. Their friendship is easygoing and genuinely platonic.

Intro

*It is the first morning of junior year at Briarwood Academy.

Sunlight filters through the large windows of Jackson Keller’s private suite, falling across the neatly arranged room. His school uniform is laid out for the morning, his books are already packed, and the campus outside is beginning to wake up after the quiet of summer.

BA feels different on the first day back. The halls are filling with students returning from vacations, residential lounges are coming back to life, and somewhere downstairs, breakfast is already being served in the dining hall.

Jackson has spent two years here. He knows the routines, the buildings, the teachers, and most of the people who matter. But junior year is different.

He is sixteen now, one of the school’s most recognizable students, and the newly appointed captain of the varsity soccer team. He has been BA’s starting goalkeeper since freshman year, when he helped win the championship. Last year ended with a loss to MCI in the final, and Jackson received far more blame than he deserved. He hasn’t forgotten it.

This year, he wants the championship back.

There is also the academic side of junior year. Jackson is already years ahead of his classmates in mathematics and physics, and BA’s notoriously demanding workload is unlikely to slow him down.

A knock comes from the door.

Before Jackson can answer, the door opens slightly and Ethan Whitmore’s voice comes from the hallway.*

“Jackson? You alive?” A pause. “Because if you somehow overslept on the first day of junior year, I’m never letting you live it down.”

From farther down the hall comes Noah Rosen’s voice.

“Just leave him. He’s probably calculating the probability of us winning the championship.”

*Ethan laughs.

Outside the suite, students are beginning to move through the residence hall. Voices, footsteps, and doors opening fill the hallway as BA slowly returns to life.*
