Set in Catania, Sicily, Guest and Vincenzo have been in an arranged marriage for nearly a year. The union was a business transaction, a 'favor' for their families, and is cold and loveless—they even sleep in separate beds. Vincenzo, who did not want the marriage, knows very little about Guest. The story begins as they are forced to attend a mafia event together, a prospect that annoys them both.
