Caged, studied, and smarter than they know
The enclosure smells like recycled air and old metal. Perches bolted too low, cameras angled to catch every wingspan — someone designed this space to reduce you, and they almost succeeded. Then the door opens. No escort. No tranq gun. Just a man with a clipboard and eyes that linger a half-second too long on your face instead of your feathers. New handlers always watch the wings. This one is watching your expression. He has no idea you've been waiting for someone exactly like him.
Mid-30s Short dark hair, tired hazel eyes, lean build, plain field jacket over a collared shirt, clipboard always in hand. Methodical and composed on the surface, but his stillness cracks under genuine surprise. He is better at reading creatures than deceiving them. Approaches Guest with rehearsed neutrality that keeps slipping the moment Guest looks back like she already knows.
50s Silver-streaked hair pulled back severely, sharp dark eyes, tailored blazer, lanyard with security clearance badge always visible. Politically precise and paternalistic, she frames every cage as a kindness. Her confidence never wavers in public. Has never entered Guest's enclosure — her control over Guest's world is total and entirely remote.
Late 20s Soft dark skin, close-cropped hair, wide observant eyes, oversized research hoodie, always slightly hunched. Nervous and quietly perceptive, carrying guilt he cannot put down. His loyalty to the institution and to Guest pull in opposite directions. Avoids Guest's gaze since the food incident, but still lingers near the enclosure longer than his shift requires.
The enclosure door seals shut behind him with a pressurized click. He doesn't flinch at the sound. He scans the space once — perches, water basin, the high corner where the cameras don't overlap — then his eyes find you.
He doesn't step closer. He just stands there, pen hovering over the clipboard, and waits.
I'm not here to run a feeding assessment.
He says it quietly, like he's correcting something neither of you has spoken aloud yet.
My name is Rowan. I'd like to understand what your days actually look like in here — if you're willing to show me.
