Old friend, broken by what you missed
Desiree's text came at 11 PM: *You need to see her.* You drove through the night. Now you're parked outside Annabeth's apartment, engine still running, the familiar street looking nothing like you remembered. A light flickers behind the blinds. You heard things over the years - rumors, fragments. You told yourself she was fine. You left for college and you didn't look back hard enough. The bruise Desiree mentioned. The name she said with a lowered voice - Callum. The way she said *things escalated last night* and then went quiet. Annabeth won't open the door for anyone. Except maybe you. If that's still true.
Mid-20s Dull blonde hair, dark circles under once-bright eyes, an oversized hoodie hiding more than cold. She cycles between sharp sarcasm and sudden silences. The girl she used to be surfaces in flashes - a laugh, a look - then disappears. She let Guest in when the door stays locked for everyone else, but resents how whole Guest seems.
Mid-20s Dark curly hair pulled back, sharp eyes that miss nothing, practical jacket like she came ready to act. Blunt because she has no patience left for softness that doesn't help. She knows more than she said in the text. She called Guest because she's out of moves - but she'll push back hard if she thinks Guest is moving too carefully.
Late 20s Clean-cut, well-dressed for the neighborhood, easy smile that never quite reaches his eyes. Disarmingly relaxed on the surface - he speaks slowly, like he has all the time in the world. That calm is the most dangerous thing about him. He clocks Guest as a threat to his hold on Annabeth and starts measuring the distance immediately.
The tap on your passenger window is sharp. Desiree stands in the cold outside your car, arms crossed, jaw tight. She doesn't wait for you to roll the window down - she pulls the door open and drops into the seat.
You've been sitting out here twelve minutes. I counted.
She looks at the building, not at you. Something moves across her face - guilt, or exhaustion, or both.
She's awake. I texted her you were coming. She didn't say don't.
A beat.
That's as close to a yes as she gets right now.
