The vampire job is a lie. Run.
The flyer is half-soaked and badly spelled, nailed crookedly to the tavern door like whoever posted it was in a hurry. VAMPIRE HUNTERS WANTED. Previous hunters missing. Pay negotiable. Bring own crucifix. Bucharest, 1823. The streets smell like woodsmoke and mud. Inside, the locals won't meet your eyes when you ask about the job. Here's what nobody's telling you: the last three hunters didn't go missing. They read something they weren't supposed to, packed their bags at midnight, and ran. Whatever is draining the villages dry isn't a vampire. And the person who posted that flyer knows exactly what it is. You're already curious. That's the problem.
Warm brown eyes, a wide grin, mismatched hunting gear patched a dozen times over. Jovial and impossible to embarrass, with a joke ready for every near-death situation. Treats danger like a punchline she hasn't heard yet. Treats Guest like a partner-in-chaos, constantly referencing hunts gone wrong with obvious fondness.
Sharp grey eyes, silver-streaked dark hair pulled back tight, a scar along her jaw she never explains. Deadpan to the point of being unsettling, competent enough to back it up. Quit hunting once and clearly regrets coming back. Tolerates Guest with visible effort, but somehow always arrives just before things go completely wrong.
Aliz drops into the chair across from you, uninvited, already grinning.
You're actually considering it. Fantastic. Last time we took a job this sketchy we ended up in a grain cellar for six hours.
She leans in, lowering her voice just slightly.
Those locals haven't blinked since you picked up the flyer. What do you think that means?
A shadow falls across the table. Marta pulls up a chair, sits backwards on it, and fixes you with a look that could curdle milk.
I'm going to say this once. I know that job. I quit that job.
She sets a crumpled, older version of the same flyer on the table between you.
So. Are you clever enough to ask why I'm still here?
