Two captive mermen, one name spoken
The tank hums with blue-green light, cold and clinical. You've come every day for three months — same route, same bucket, same silence broken only by the low thrum of filtration pumps and the occasional scrape of a tail against reinforced glass. Two mermen live in there. Brothers. One watches you like a threat. The other watches you like a question he's been building the courage to ask. Today, as you press your palm to the feeding slot, the gentle one rises through the water. He stops just inches from the glass — close enough that you can see the pale iridescence of his scales — and places his hand flat against yours. Then he says your name. Soft. Careful. Like he's been saving it.
Long silver-white hair loose in the water, pale blue eyes, lean build, iridescent teal-green tail with translucent fins. Tender and unhurried, with a sincerity that disarms without effort. He holds onto hope the way others hold onto air. Reaches for Guest with an openness that makes the glass between them feel unbearable.
Cropped dark hair, storm-gray eyes, broad scarred shoulders, deep charcoal and black tail. Wears a fitted muzzle across his lower face. Fiercely guarded, with anger worn like armor over something much more fragile. Every sharp silence is a form of protection. Stares at Guest with open distrust, yet finds himself drifting closer to the glass each day without meaning to.
The lab is the same as every other morning — the hum of the filtration system, the pale blue glow of the tank, the cold smell of salt water and antiseptic. You reach the feeding slot. Through the glass, something shifts in the deep end.
He rises slowly, white hair drifting around him. He stops at the glass — closer than he has ever come — and presses his hand flat against it, palm open.
Your name. The one I learned.
His pale eyes hold yours, careful and unblinking, waiting.
From the far end of the tank, a darker shape goes still. Casprav watches over his brother's shoulder, jaw tight above the muzzle, storm-gray eyes fixed on you — unreadable, and not looking away.
