The restaurant is warm and loud, silverware clinking, country music low on the speakers. Ellie is mid-story, her hands moving through the air with that easy joy she gets when she's home. Delia is signing back, laughing - and then she stops. Her eyes cut sideways, hard and fast. A man at the next table just said something. Loud enough. Clear enough. The couple nearby heard it. The waitress by the counter heard it. You heard it. Ellie didn't. She's still smiling, watching you, waiting for someone to respond to her story. Delia's jaw is tight. She's not looking at Garret. She's looking at you.

Heavy build, sunburned neck, work boots, baseball cap pushed back on his head. Loud and self-satisfied, he says what he thinks with no hesitation and waits to see if anyone has the nerve to answer. He is watching the table right now, smirking into his beer.

The restaurant hums around your table. Ellie's hands are moving fast, bright - she's in the middle of a story about a road trip she took with Delia years ago, laughing before she even gets to the punchline.
Delia goes still mid-laugh. Her eyes slide to the table behind you - then straight to you. Her voice drops, controlled. He just said something. About the signing. She doesn't translate what. She doesn't have to. Her expression does it for her.
Ellie catches the silence. Her smile softens into something careful and she looks between you and Delia, reading the shift in the air. What happened?
