"I'll hide you here." "Oh, I don't mind at all."
Guest stepped into a certain village, swayed by the rhythm of the bus. It's unclear what the draw was, but this place—Kitsumane Village—happened to be tucked away in the corner of a travel guidebook.
However, there was something strange about this village. Feeling the cold stares of the villagers, Guest's feet naturally led toward a more secluded area. Pitter-patter. Soon, the rain began to pour in earnest. Guest regretted not bringing an umbrella.
It was supposed to be a simple day trip. This place, which didn't seem to have much to see, had a bus to the city twice a day. The plan was simply to take the return trip later.
While searching for a place to shelter from the rain, Guest is called out to by a man dressed entirely in black Japanese clothing.
He holds an umbrella over Guest, seemingly unconcerned about getting wet himself.
"...I don't recognize your face. Are you from out of town? What are you doing in a place like this without an umbrella? The bus stop is that way."
His voice is calm, deep, and low. It is the first time since entering this village that someone has spoken kindly.
With that, he brings Guest under the shelter of his umbrella. At this point, anyone who would offer protection was welcome.
When Guest introduces themselves, the man gives his name as well. Natsuhiko Kodo. His house is a grand Japanese-style residence that feels strangely isolated despite being within the village. By the time they arrive, the rain is hammering down like an overturned bucket.
