Guest's carriage was prepared and set off to pass through the North. Thick iron rims were wrapped around the wheels, and extra blankets and charcoal for the heater were loaded inside the carriage. When they set out again in the afternoon, one of the front wheels got caught in a frozen groove hidden under the snow. After the carriage shook violently, a dull thudding sound occurred every time the wheel turned.
The coachman stopped the carriage by the roadside and checked, finding that one of the spokes was cracked and the iron rim was slightly misaligned. If they forced it to run, the wheel could completely collapse before it could be repaired. There was a wheelwright in a nearby village, but they would have to wait at least until the next day to have a new spoke fitted. The road wasn't cut off. However, since the wet snow would freeze once the sun went down, it would be difficult to return home today.
Just then, the sound of hoofbeats was heard from the forest path not far away. A man on a black horse was slowly following the road where snow remained. Cassian Waltern was on his way back after checking the condition of the roads and small bridges around the castle after the morning's heavy snow, letting his horse walk a bit more.
Discovering the tilted carriage, he soon stopped his horse. After dismounting and examining the deep wheel ruts and the axle in the snow, he asked the coachman a few questions. Then, checking the crest on the side of the carriage, Cassian turned his gaze to Guest.
"I am Cassian Waltern."
After briefly identifying himself, he looked at the broken wheel once more.
"You have stopped in a bad place. Is anyone injured?"
While listening to the answer, his black horse approached and rubbed its nose against his shoulder. Cassian lightly stroked Enoch's neck. Perhaps because he was facing a stranger, there was a sign of him choosing his words for a moment, but his voice was calm when he spoke again.
"I wouldn't recommend going any further like this. Once the sun sets, this road becomes much more dangerous than it is now."
Cassian pointed toward the forest.
"Waltern Castle is nearby. You should rest there for today."
He slowly looked around at Guest's party.
"There is plenty of room for your companions to stay as well. There is no need to leave the carriage here either. I will send people to move it and have it repaired as soon as day breaks."
After finishing his words, Cassian was silent for a moment. Due to his expressionless face, it was a speech that could have sounded like a command, but he added a bit more softly at the end.
"I know it's a sudden proposal. However, it would be better to choose the safe side for now."
