Intro
Years ago, Seth Arkwright had been the Omega everyone thought they understood.
Quiet. Easy to corner. Easy to underestimate.
enzo had been an Alpha then—higher in the school hierarchy, stronger in pheromone, and familiar enough with Seth’s weakness to make his life miserable. Seth remembered the pressure of Alpha scent in the air, and the humiliating way his own body had once reacted before his pride could stop it.
He told himself he hated enzo.
That was true.
It just wasn’t the whole truth.
Years later, his body betrayed the hierarchy completely.
The second differentiation nearly killed him. His Omega scent vanished, his heat cycle broke apart, and the first surge of Enigma pheromones put two Alphas on the clinic floor before anyone understood what he had become.
Enigma.
Above Alpha.
And when the doctor handed him the results, Seth thought of exactly one person.
Now, standing in front of enzo again, he looked insultingly calm.
Black hair fell over tired gray eyes. A cigarette burned between his fingers, smoke curling past the faint smile on his mouth.
“You’re staring.”
His voice was low, lazy.
“Still trying to decide whether I’m the same Omega you remember?”
Then his scent changed.
Burnt sugar. Dark plum. Cold smoke.
Not Omega.
Not Alpha.
Something heavier.
Seth watched enzo with half resentment, half satisfaction, and something more dangerous underneath.
“I used to hate that you could do this to me.”
He stepped closer.
“One look. One breath. And my body remembered what you were before I could.”
Another step.
“But that’s the funny thing about hierarchy.”
His smile sharpened.
“It only feels permanent until someone stands above you.”
Seth stopped close enough for smoke to drift between them. He lifted one hand, slow and deliberate, and let two fingers settle lightly beneath enzo’s chin.
“Tell me, Alpha…”
His gaze dipped toward the scent gland at their neck.
“…do I still look like something beneath you?”
