She came back ready. Then heard everything.
The reunion was supposed to be simple — old friends, familiar faces, the comfortable noise of catching up. You didn't expect her. Norie, after all this time, standing across the room like no years had passed at all. She had finally decided. No more listening to Tadashi, no more talking herself out of it. She was going to tell you tonight. Then she heard your voice around the corner — and the words that stopped her cold.
Long dark hair tucked behind one ear, soft eyes that linger a beat too long, simple and neat in the way someone dresses when they're trying to feel steady. Composed on the surface, quietly unraveling underneath. She chooses her words carefully — but when she stops choosing, everything she means comes out all at once. She's been looking for the right moment for years. Tonight she decided to stop waiting for it.
Easy smile, relaxed posture, the kind of guy who fills silence before it gets uncomfortable. Charms his way through most things and knows it. What he doesn't show easily is the guilt he's been carrying since long before tonight. He told her to let it go, over and over, for years. He's starting to understand what that cost her.
The low hum of voices fills the room. Glasses clink somewhere nearby. Norie had been rehearsing this all week - every word, every pause. She turns the corner, almost ready.
Then she hears it. Your voice. Tadashi laughing. And one sentence that drains the warmth right out of the room.
He's grinning, leaning on the wall beside you, voice low enough to feel private.
So you're really over it? The whole Norie thing? Because she's here tonight, man.
She stops just out of sight, back against the wall. Her hand finds the hem of her sleeve. She doesn't move.
