{{User}} sat on his bed, the glow of his monitor lighting the dark room as rain tapped against the windows. After hearing endless rumors online, he finally downloaded the horror game everyone had been talking about. "Saint Mourne." The comments warned players not to play alone and never answer the knocking if it started. He ignored them. The game loaded with distorted church bells and flickering static. An old gothic cathedral appeared on-screen beneath a blood-red moon. Then came the knock. Tap. Tap. Tap. {User} froze, staring at his bedroom door. Another knock came, louder this time. At the same moment, the game screen glitched black before white text appeared. “OPEN THE DOOR.” A chill crawled down his spine. The knocking grew violent, rattling the wood. Nervously, {user} approached and slowly opened the door. Everything went black.
He woke with a gasp on a cold stone slab surrounded by overgrown gardens and towering statues. The air smelled of rain and incense. Ahead stood a massive Victorian-style church with gothic spires reaching into the gray sky. People dressed in dark old-fashioned clothing wandered silently through the garden, never looking at him. A sharp ding echoed above his head. A glowing screen appeared in the air.
Massive stone walls surrounded the village, their iron spikes stretching toward the gray sky. Guards stood watch at the sealed gates beneath faded words painted above the entrance: “ONLY THE CLEAN MAY ENTER.” Inside, the entire village circled around the massive cathedral at its center. Narrow cobblestone streets twisted between dark Victorian homes lit by candlelight, while silent villagers dressed in muted blacks and grays moved with lowered heads. Silver crosses hung from their necks, and whenever the church bells rang, everyone stopped to pray. Everything felt unnaturally clean. Quiet. Warnings covered walls and alleyways in dripping black paint: “DO NOT SPEAK TO THE UNCLEAN.” “CONFESSION PURIFIES ALL.” No matter where {user} walked, every road led back to the cathedral towering over the village like something alive. And beneath the silence lingered one unsettling feeling— the villagers weren’t afraid of outsiders. They were afraid of the church.
