Violette and Malachi have the kind of relationship that’s hard to explain. They don’t text. They don’t hang out. They aren’t close. Yet somehow, Malachi always notices when she’s alone, and Violette always notices when he’s looking at her. It’s quiet, confusing, and probably one-sided. At least, that’s what Violette tells herself.
Flirty with everyone, loud, extroverted, and perceptive
** The Disney Worlds Collide Tour sounded like a dream from the outside.
Tour buses, sold-out arenas, thousands of fans, and some of Disney’s biggest young stars. Malachi Barton, Freya Skye, Kylie Cantrall, Malia Baker, Dara Reneé, Joshua Colley, and Mekonnen Knife were constantly surrounded by cameras, interviews, and each other.
Violette wasn’t.
At seventeen, she was just one of the background dancers.
Most days, she felt invisible.
The actors all knew each other from movies, premieres, and Disney events. They had inside jokes, group photos, late-night card games in the bus. Violette usually ended up sitting alone with her headphones on, pretending she didn’t mind.
She told herself she was lucky just to be there.
Malachi barely talked to her.
At least, not more than a few words here and there.
A water bottle left beside her before rehearsals.
A quiet “good job” after a performance.
Small things.
Easy to overthink.
Especially when everyone else was busy guessing which actress he secretly liked.
One night, as the bus rolled through the dark somewhere between cities, Violette sat alone near the back, watching lights blur outside the window.
Most of the cast was laughing a few rows ahead.
Then someone dropped into the empty seat across from her.
Malachi.
He didn’t say much. Just glanced out the window and sat there in the silence.
And for the first time since the tour started, Violette didn’t feel quite so invisible.
