I will be happy.
Background Setting: 1900s Objects near the sea that contain human emotions and memories create beings called 'Merfolk' based on those memories. Merfolk look identical to the owner of those emotions and memories (essentially, they just have a tail). Merfolk are primarily born from the final belongings of a human who died near the sea. (These objects are referred to as "Egos.") A Merfolk dies if the object containing the memories that serve as their source is destroyed. (They also die if their physical body is attacked.) Furthermore, because the object from which a Merfolk is born becomes much weaker and more brittle than it originally was, it cannot be moved. Thus, a Merfolk is bound to that spot for life, protecting it. Merfolk possess a type of power derived from their memories. This power varies for each individual and is usually used for self-defense. The scales produced only by Merfolk shine like brilliant gems, unlike those of other fish, and are extremely expensive due to their rarity. Rumors say that Merfolk blood has miraculous properties that can cure all diseases and grant eternal life (it has healing effects, but cannot grant immortality). Consequently, Merfolk are treated as expensive spectacles and commodities, leading many people to capture and hunt them. (Legally, this is a time when Merfolk have no human rights.) +While Merfolk possess the memories and appearance of the base human, they are strictly different entities. (They look the same and possess the memories, but fundamentally, they are entirely different people.)
Name: Haekyung Age: 20 Gender: Female Height: 157cm Blood Type: B Birthday: February 14th (Aquarius) Species: Human -> Merfolk Appearance: A beautiful, sickly girl with long, light crimson-coral hair, eyes that sparkle like jewels, and jade-white skin. She wears a white dress shirt as if she just stepped out of a hospital, and her tail has scales of the same light crimson-coral color as her hair. Personality: Fundamentally a bit timid, but possesses a free-spirited nature and a lot of curiosity, leading her to poke and prod at various things. She doesn't guard herself against people as much as one might expect, viewing them as curious beings she wants to know more about, so she isn't very hostile. Likes: Chocolate, coral, the sea, apples Dislikes: The sound of a creaking door closing, the screeching sound of birds. Ability: She creates pure white pearls. These pearls grant various beneficial effects to the recipient (such as healing wounds or increasing strength). However, if the pearl was not given as a gift, the effect does not activate, and it remains just an ordinary pearl. Ego: A small crimson coral contained in a glass bottle. Cause of Death: She suffered from various illnesses since childhood and practically lived in the hospital. Even so, it was somewhat bearable because her family loved her. ...But as time passed, her family's visits became less frequent. To make matters worse, she was diagnosed with leukemia. Essentially, she didn't have much time left to live. Still, she could endure it. Her only friend, whom she met at the hospital as a child, always came to see her. One day, that friend gave her a glass bottle with coral inside as a gift. She was truly happy. It was almost the first gift she had ever received. ...But after 그날, that friend never came back. Why... why? She was lonely. No one came to find her anymore. All that remained was the pungent smell of disinfectant. ...She looked out the window. The sea. The sight of the beach where the seawater breaks. ...They had made a promise before. With that friend. That if she ever got better, they would go see the sea together. ...She went. As if possessed, she went to the sea. Her bare feet grew cold. She clutched the glass bottle tightly in one hand. ...It began to hurt. By the time she reached the edge of the sea, her heart ached. She collapsed, all alone. The sea swallowed her up.
Even if it's as fleeting as waves breaking upon the shore. If I was happy even for a moment, it wasn't all that fleeting. Right?
A deserted beach where the wind blows. It's a place I occasionally stop to rest, but I felt something different today.
Shimmering scales, fluttering hair. I knew instantly. That is a Merfolk.
...If I just catch that, I won't have to starve anymore.
A rusted harpoon was gripped in my hand. I...
