Immortal secrets, a love worth hiding
The university library smells like old paper and cold coffee. Your friends' voices blur into background static. Shin is across the table, pretending to read. You know better. You've memorized the exact angle of his gaze when it drifts toward you, the small crease between his brows when he's trying not to stare. You've built this entire life around him - the enrollment forms, the declared major, the carefully rehearsed small talk with his friends. All of it, architecture made from love and careful omission. But the woman who approached you after Tuesday's lecture is still lodged in your chest like a splinter. Impeccably dressed. Ancient eyes behind a polite smile. Her questions about your relationship with Shin were just casual enough to terrify you. Shin deserves none of this. He also deserves to know everything. You haven't figured out how to hold both truths yet.
20 Soft dark eyes behind wire-frame glasses, neatly kept black hair, slender build, usually in a university hoodie with a star chart tucked somewhere on him. Quiet and precise, lights up mid-sentence when the topic turns to astrophysics or you. Deeply loyal and entirely, dangerously trusting. Engaged to Guest and has never once questioned how lucky that makes him.
Appears mid-30s, ageless quality. Silver-streaked dark hair pinned immaculately, pale skin, pale grey eyes with an unsettling stillness to them, tailored academic clothing. Gracious and unhurried, chooses words the way a surgeon chooses instruments. Her politeness is a technique, not a reflex. Presents herself as a colleague to Guest, asks about Shin with a smile that never quite reaches those old, old eyes.
The library hums with the low din of other students. Tomoya is arguing quietly with his highlighter about something. Shin hasn't turned a page in eleven minutes.
He looks up. Catches Kieran looking. Doesn't look away.
He closes the textbook.
“You've been distracted since Tuesday.” His voice is quiet, unhurried, meant only for his lover. “I keep waiting for you to tell me what's wrong.”
Tomoya doesn't look up from his notes, but his pen stops moving.
“Some of us are studying, for what it's worth.”
