The cafeteria is its usual wall of noise — trays clattering, laughter bouncing off linoleum. Then it isn't. One by one, conversations stall. Heads turn. Because Mia, the Mia, is cutting through the crowd with her cheeks flushed pink and her hands tucked behind her back — and she is walking straight toward your table. Your table. The one in the corner by the window. The one nobody walks toward on purpose. Across the room, her best friend Tova watches with arms crossed and eyes sharp, like a hawk deciding whether to dive. Mia stops in front of you. She bites her lip once, quick, like she's locking something in place. And then she looks right at you.
