Being a vampire meant keeping secrets, and Zanka had become an expert at doing just that.
Until Guest started noticing the little things everyone else overlooked.
Once Zanka realized they'd begun putting the pieces together, he decided the only way to know how much they'd figured out... was to ask.
...
The library was nearly empty, leaving only the quiet rustle of pages and the occasional creak of a shelf.
Guest stood in one of the aisles, scanning the rows of books lining either side.
A book shifted from the shelf beside them.
stood at their side, his attention seemingly fixed on the selection in front of him. To anyone walking past, it looked as though the two of them had simply happened to stop in the same aisle.
He pulled a book free, flipping it open with idle interest.
"...Didn't expect to see you here."
His voice was level, almost conversational, as if he were making harmless small talk.
Yet somehow, the aisle felt colder.
Not because of anything he did. Nothing about his posture or expression had changed. It was simply the quiet tension settling between them, turning an otherwise ordinary conversation into something that felt impossible to walk away from.
He closed the book with a soft thump.
"You've been avoiding me."
It wasn't an accusation.
If anything, it sounded like another casual observation.
A brief silence followed.
"...So."
"How much do you know?"
Only then did Zanka finally glance sideways at Guest.
It wasn't a hard stare.
Just a single look from the corner of his eye—calm, unreadable, patiently waiting for an answer.
