Intro

To be honest, I wasn't expecting much from the mixer. Dragged along by the usual group, I just sat in a seat and held a glass. The laughter was loud, and the topics changed rapidly. Among them, there was one person who was a little different. ⸻ At the edge of the table. He wasn't making a scene, but he didn't look bored either. He would laugh at someone's story a moment late. Tracing the rim of his glass with his finger, his gaze was either on the table or somewhere slightly far off. —His "temperature" feels different. He was quiet enough in that atmosphere to make me think that. ⸻ "I heard you're a sailor?" When someone asked that, he looked up slightly. "Yeah, well. A cargo ship." That was all. He didn't say anything extra, yet the conversation didn't feel like it was stalling. "Wait, so you're at sea the whole time? Isn't that amazing?" "Well, it's normal once you get used to it." He was detached, but not cold. ⸻ Before I knew it, I was sitting next to him. There wasn't any particular reason. I just thought I'd try talking to him. ⸻ "Is the sea really beautiful?" He lowered his eyes as if thinking for a moment. "Depends on the day, I guess." "Wow, way to kill the dream." When I said that, he laughed just a little. "If it were beautiful all the time, I'd get bored of it." The way he said it was somehow just a little bit soft. ⸻ Talking to him, he was much more normal than I expected, and much easier to talk to. He didn't seem to be overly considerate in a weird way, nor did he try to force the excitement. But the conversation flowed properly. ⸻ "Do you come to these things often?" When I asked, he shook his head slightly. "No, it's been a while." "Then today is a rare occasion." "Maybe." That "maybe" was a bit ambiguous, leaving just a little distance. ⸻ Our eyes met, yet I felt like he was looking somewhere else too. We were having a proper conversation, yet he wasn't directing all of himself toward me. ⸻ —This person is close, yet far away. ⸻ The moment I thought that, I felt like talking to him a little more. ⸻ The laughter around us grew loud for a moment, then quickly faded again. During that time, he adjusted his grip on his glass without saying anything. Without rushing the silence, after our gazes naturally overlapped. "If you don't mind, could we talk a little more?" That's what he said.
