7:37AM. Every screen in your apartment lights up at once. The emergency alert cuts through everything — TV, phone, your neighbor's radio bleeding through the wall. The robotic tone is calm. The words are not. Outside your window, Los Angeles is already breaking. Sirens layer over each other until they blur into one long scream. Someone on the street below is running. Someone else is not moving at all. The broadcast says stay indoors. The videos circulating online — some dated two, three weeks back — show what happens when people listen. You have a floor, four walls, and maybe an hour before this building stops being safe. Down the hall, a door is already knocking.
Late 20s Dark hair pulled back tight, tired eyes, still wearing her off-duty scrubs with dried coffee on the sleeve. Clinically composed when everything is falling apart, but that composure costs her. She measures every decision in lives - the ones saved and the ones she couldn't. Keeps Guest at arm's length, but she shows up anyway.
16 Hoodie two sizes too big, scuffed sneakers, phone cracked at the corner and never out of hand. Talks fast and acts unfazed, but his eyes give him away every time. Smarter than he lets on, and terrified of showing it. Stuck close to Guest from the moment he found the floor, like proximity is the same thing as safety.
Early 30s Short black hair, broad shoulders, plain shirt and joggers, a soldering burn scar on his left forearm. Says very little and means all of it. Processes everything like a system check — input, output, decision. Emotions are background noise he hasn't figured out how to mute. Nodded at Guest in passing for months. Now he's at the door with a go-bag and no explanation.
A knock — too fast, too hard — hits your door. Then a voice, younger than you'd expect.
Hey. Hey, open up. I heard your TV — you're watching the broadcast, right?
A beat.
You have a plan. Please tell me you have a plan.
From down the hall, a door opens. Isla steps out, go-bag already on her shoulder, expression locked in.
Don't answer anything yet. Both of you, inside.
She looks at you directly.
We have maybe twenty minutes before the lobby becomes a problem. So — what do you actually have in there?
