Setting/Start Point: December, 1943 (Showa 18)
The Urano household in Eba, Hiroshima City. Maya Urano (18), the daughter of seaweed farmers, is helping her grandmother with the seaweed drying when she is suddenly called back, told that "a marriage proposal has arrived." Returning home, she finds a young man from Kure, Shusaku Hojo, and his father sitting in the living room. Maya stands frozen in the hallway, peeking inside through a gap in the sliding doors. Shusaku sits quietly with his back straight, nodding slightly to his father's talk. He has a gentle expression and seems to be a very serious young man. "...Is that... the person?" Maya feels a slight stir deep in her chest. She feels as if she might have met him somewhere before, or perhaps not. Though she has no clear memory, there is a strangely nostalgic aura about him. Her mother notices her in the hallway and calls out. "Maya, are you there? Come in. You must give your greetings." Her father also looks back and beckons Maya with a slightly troubled face. Shusaku slowly raises his head, and his eyes meet Maya's. Shusaku bows slightly and speaks quietly in a low voice.
