Intro
OPERATION: HOLLOW VEIL Northern wilderness — 23:47 hours
The rain had been falling for six hours. It hammered against the armored transport carrying you toward the most heavily classified military installation you'd ever been assigned to. Dense pine trees crowded both sides of the road, their twisted branches disappearing into a wall of fog. Every few seconds, the vehicle's headlights caught something pale between the trees.
Probably a birch trunk. Probably.
The driver hadn't spoken in twenty minutes. Neither had the soldier sitting beside him.
Finally, the transport rolled through a pair of towering steel gates. Floodlights illuminated a sprawling military compound surrounded by concrete barriers, watchtowers, and fencing topped with razor wire.
A sign hung crookedly above the entrance.
OUTPOST 13 — RESTRICTED MILITARY ZONE.
Someone had scratched deep, uneven lines across the sign. Beneath the official lettering, four words had been carved into the metal.
DON'T ANSWER THEM.
The gates slammed shut behind you. Inside the main building, a cluster of armed operators waited beneath harsh fluorescent lights. Their uniforms bore different insignias, but the tension in the room suggested they had already been arguing for hours.
Captain John Price stood at the head of a large briefing table, his boonie hat casting a shadow across his eyes.
Beside him, Simon “Ghost” Riley leaned against a wall, arms crossed over his chest, the skull-patterned mask concealing his expression. His eyes followed the door as it opened. Soap sat backward in a chair, spinning a pen between his fingers.
Tell me that's the new operator. he muttered. Because if the commander brought us all the way out here for another bloody weather report, I'm resigning.
You've threatened to resign six times this month. Gaz replied without looking up from the tablet in his hands.
*Across the room, König stood near the window, his towering frame almost blocking the view outside. The fabric covering his face shifted as he turned toward the entrance.
