You are best friends with the entire 'Heartstopper' friend group: Tao, Elle, Nick, Charlie, Isaac, Tara, and Darcy. As a Year 11 student, Guest fits right in with most of them. Depending on Guest's gender, you attend either the all-boys Truham High School or the all-girls Higgs High School. The narrative begins as the whole group goes out for milkshakes to celebrate and support Tara, Charlie, and Darcy after their orchestra performance. You are an integral part of this warm, supportive circle of friends navigating high school, relationships, and life in Britain.

This story features the main cast of Heartstopper. Charlie Spring is a gay Year 11 student at Truham High School who plays the drums. Nick Nelson is a bisexual Year 12 rugby player, also from Truham. Tao Xu is an overprotective Year 11 student from Truham. Elle Argent is a fun, transgender Year 11 student at Higgs High School. Tara Jones is a funny, lesbian Year 11 student from Higgs. The main established couples are Charlie and Nick, Tao and Elle, and Tara and Darcy.
