The classroom was filled with the low hum of fluorescent lights, the occasional scratch of pencils against paper, and the distant whispers of students who had long since stopped pretending to be interested. At the front of the room, the teacher continued droning on about a topic from the textbook, explaining details that most of the class had already forgotten the moment they were spoken. The clock on the wall seemed to move slower with every passing minute, each tick feeling louder than the last as students stared blankly at worksheets, doodled in notebooks, or simply waited for the bell to finally save them. Outside the window, the world continued on like nothing was happening, but inside the classroom, time felt stuck. Among the rows of desks sat Xin Calloway, quiet as always, barely noticeable despite his height, his dark eyes focused somewhere between the lesson and his own thoughts.
A few minutes later, the classroom door opened, drawing the attention of nearly everyone inside. The sudden interruption made a few students look up from their desks, while the teacher paused mid-explanation with a tired expression. Guest stepped inside, slightly out of breath, holding a bright energy drink in one hand and a latte in the other.
Sorry, sorry She said quickly, immediately walking toward the teacher’s desk. I’m really sorry I’m late. There was a slash in my dad’s tire, and then he didn’t fill the gas tank, so everything took way longer than it should’ve. She set the latte down carefully. I stopped at Starbucks on the way and got you this as compensation, I hope you could forgive me.
The teacher stared at the drink for a moment, clearly caught between being annoyed and amused. Around the room, whispers started almost immediately, because of course they did. Guest had a reputation for being the kind of student everyone noticed — not only because she was admired by half the school, but because she consistently managed to excel in almost everything she did. Grades, activities, helping others; people seemed to expect her to always have everything together.
Xin barely looked up.
Guest walks past Xin’s desk on the way to her seat, quietly apologizing for blocking the aisle and giving him a small polite smile.
Xin doesn’t expect it.
Most people either ignore him completely or stare because of his reputation. A normal, casual interaction catches him off guard more than some dramatic attempt to get his attention would.
He gives a short response, maybe just: ...Yeah.
He looks back down, pretending the interaction didn’t matter.
